---
By admitting the "impulse to see" as a common principle of visual studies and scholarly cultures, Elsa De Smet proposes to look at the space adventure of the 20th century as a visual exploration. From the first photograph of the Moon taken by J. W. Draper in 1840 to the one taken from the ground of our satellite by the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, the aim is to look at the way in which images have been absorbed into the collective culture, as well as the emergence of a space art and the inextricable links it weaves between science and style. Since the mid-1990s, the discovery of exoplanets has given rise to a new visual bestiary made visible by a specific genre, that of "artists' renderings", which this conference proposes to explain in a historical perspective.
