Frozen surfaces in the Solar System as well as icy grain mantles in the ISM are exposed to cosmic rays and solar/stellar wind ions that determine changes in their physical properties and chemical composition. Laboratory experiments allow to study the effects induced by ion bombardment in icy mixtures and to obtain information to support the interpretation of astronomical observations and space mission data of frozen surfaces. I will present recent result that inform on the timescales of processing of icy surfaces in the outer Solar System by solar and cosmic ions. Organic refractory materials are formed in such timescales, and the characterization of laboratory analogues of organic refractories informs on how their composition and the presence of compounds of interest for astrobiology depend on the timescales of irradiation.
