Scientific publication in practice, from the editor’s side

Peer-reviewed journals play an essential role in science, by disseminating, and more importantly in the current electronic era, by validating, the results of scientific research. Yet, what journals actually do is sometimes slightly mysterious to their authors. I will provide a behind the scene presentation of this process, mostly using the example of A&A since I am associated with that journal. The presentation will be directed towards students and young postdocs, who haven’t yet fully figured out the journal system through repeated contact in various roles, but it will hopefully contain tidbits of interest to more experienced colleagues as well.
