When I was born, protoplanetary discs were artists impressions. Since 2015 images from near-infrared to sub-mm have revealed gaps, rings and holes hinting at the presence of newborn planets. In 2018 we saw the first direct evidence of embedded planets, thanks to both imaging and Doppler mapping of the gas flow in the disc. In this talk I will bring you from zero to hero on the latest evidence for how planets are born in the Universe. We’ll combine observations and theory to learn how solar systems, like our own, came to be.
