Dust characterization in planet-forming disks: theory, observations, and lab measurements

Thanks to the recent advent of observations and data reduction techniques, we are able to study the properties of dust particles in planet-forming disks in greater detail, which is essential for improving our understanding of the early stages of planet formation. One of the major challenges in modeling observations of planet-forming disks is that realistic dust particles are unlikely to be perfectly spherical grains as typically assumed. Meanwhile, our understanding of the optical properties of non-spherical particles has improved rapidly, driven in particular by numerical light-scattering simulations and laboratory measurements. This knowledge has now begun to be applied to understanding observations of planet-forming disks. In this talk, I'll present our recent efforts to understand dust properties and their evolution in planet-forming disks based on observations with VLT, Subaru, JWST, and ALMA and address some future prospects.
