The IRAM Northern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA)

NOEMA is a 12-antennas millimeter interferometer located on the Plateau de Bure (Alps). It provides very versatile observation possibilities, with science topics covering the study of the solar system (planetary atmospheres, comets), stars and protoplanetary disk formation, late star evolution phases, chemical and physical properties of the interstellar medium, nearby galaxies, as well as galaxy formation at high redshift and the related cosmological studies. NOEMA is now approaching completion of the Phase 1 of its construction : the new correlator PolyFiX has been commissioned last November and the 10th antenna will be put into operations this summer. The construction of the 11th antenna (Phase 2) will start later this year. NOEMA provides unique observational capacities in particular for multi-lines observations and spectral surveys, and at the same time complements ALMA to provide all-sky coverage in the millimeter range with similar sensitivities. An overview on the actual status of the project and of the first science results will be given, as well as a description of the next developments planned in the near future and the observational possibilities they will offer.
