Deciphering the chemical content of a nearby starburst galaxy with ALCHEMI

Star formation is intimately linked to the gas from which it forms: whilst the local environment determines what fuels star formation, the latter simultaneously shapes the surrounding gas through various feedback mechanisms, which can include turbulence, shocks, and ionization by cosmic rays and ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Starburst galaxies exhibit higher rates of star formation per unit molecular gas compared to regular spiral galaxies, and are thus prime laboratories to investigate these feedback mechanisms. Due to the advent of powerful (sub-)millimetre interferometers, the past 15 years have undergone a remarkable boom in extragalactic studies of the molecular, star-forming gas. In particular the ALMA Comprehensive High-resolution Extragalactic Molecular Inventory (ALCHEMI; Martín et al. 2021) Large Program provides a most complete unbiased molecular survey (from 84.2 to 373.2 GHz) towards the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253, at an unprecedented angular resolution of 1.6" (~27pc), and revealed a wealth of molecular complexity. In this talk, I will present an overview of the results of the ALCHEMI large programme, which have helped to improve our general understanding of the star formation process in starburst galaxies.
