The new era of interferometry - where we are and where to go

The implementation of laser guide stars on all 8m telescopes of the Very Large Telescope Interferometer marks the beginning of yet another new era of stellar interferometry. Together with new adaptive optics, large-separation fringe tracking, and performance upgrades to the instruments and infrastructure, GRAVITY+ has now opened up the extragalactic sky for milli-arcsecond resolution imaging and provides ever higher contrast for the observation of exoplanets. Following a period of spectacular breakthroughs in selected research areas, including the Galactic Center, the VLTI now serves a wide variety of astrophysics, e.g. star- and planet formation, exoplanets, stellar physics, lensed objects, compact objects, black holes, and extragalactic astrophysics out to cosmological distances. This presentation gives an overview of the current state of interferometry and its results, describes its limitations, discusses the parameter space, and outlines future developments.
