Asteroidal samples returned by space missions: what for?

Although several tons of meteorites fall to Earth each year, there remains strong scientific interest in asteroidal samples collected in situ by space missions, such as the recent Hayabusa-2 mission by JAXA and OSIRIS-REx by NASA. In this seminar, I will first outline the key motivations for studying such samples. I will then highlight the work carried out by our group at IPAG on the characterization of Hayabusa2 samples, with a particular focus on carbonaceous matter. These samples were returned to Earth more than 5 years ago, but they continue to be the subject of active investigation. I will finish this talk by presenting some of our latest results and discussing them in the broader context of primitive cosmomaterials.
