Solar Orbiter and friends: all eyes on our Sun

The Sun is a restless star, constantly releasing energy through dramatic events like solar flares, or smaller but ubiquitous heating events, key to the dynamics of its atmosphere. All these events contribute to the variability of the Sun at various scales: beyond its atmosphere, they accelerate particles, solar wind and solar storms that change the conditions found in the global magnetised solar system: the heliosphere. Launched in 2020, the Solar Orbiter mission is helping us to deepen our understandings of what dictates, and how, the Sun’s variability. Working alongside a wider fleet of space telescopes and probes, and ground-based observatories, we are now capturing a “multi-messenger” dataset. Detailed images of the Sun's atmosphere and direct measurements of the solar wind streaming past the spacecraft itself are a powerful combination that links what happens on the Sun to what eventually reaches us. A key part of this research involves mapping out special structures in the Sun's magnetic field that would eventually travel away from our star, and in the neighborhood of planets and space probes. Together, these observatories on ground and in space are helping us build a clearer, more unified picture of how the Sun releases energy and drives the space weather that shapes our world.
