Exoplanet science with astrometry

Measuring the positions of nearby stars, i.e. astrometric observations, can inform us on the presence and properties of extrasolar planets around them, because planets induce an orbital reflex motion on the host star. I will present an overview of this technique and results from observational programmes that include decade-long monitoring with very large optical telescopes. I will then discuss the European Space Agency’s Gaia space astrometry mission and the breakthroughs that can be expected from its first principal data release (Gaia DR4) on 2 December 2026.
