The proto-planetary disc turbulent model in comparison with the observations

Planets form in proto-planetary discs, which provide the gaseous and solid building blocks to assemble planets. Therefore, only if we understand proto-planetary discs can we build a successful planet formation theory. Recent observational campaigns, especially with the sub-mm interferometer ALMA, have compiled disc demographics for large disc samples. These data are critical to assess our fundamental understanding of discs, such as the assumption that they are turbulent objects that can be described by an effective viscosity. I will present results from the ALMA Large Programme AGE-PRO and preliminary results from DECO. Both these campaigns are demographic surveys which focus in particular on the measurement of the disc mass, a fundamental demographic property which historically has been very elusive to measure accurately, and for this reason I will dedicate some time to discuss different methods to measure disc masses. I will then show through population synthesis modelling how to interpret the demographics data, assessing whether discs are turbulent objects or if instead the demographics can be better described if most discs experience mass-loss through winds launched by the disc magnetic field. We now have spatially resolved observations of winds thanks to JWST and I will conclude discussing these observations in the context of numerical simulations of disc winds.
