Séminaire IPAG
35 years of high-energy astrophysics: a career summary
jeudi 8 octobre 2026 - 11h00
Gilles Henri - IPAG---
In this seminar, we will review the evolution of high-energy astrophysics, particularly the study of compact objects, over the speaker's 35-year scientific career. This period has been marked by an extraordinary development of instrumental capabilities in space and on the ground, leading to a considerable increase in our knowledge of very high-energy radiation emissions, indicative of the extreme physical conditions prevailing within these objects. Simultaneously, it has also witnessed an equally extraordinary development of high-performance computing capabilities, enabling the creation of increasingly sophisticated numerical models. However, some fundamental questions that existed before these developments remain unanswered. We will draw some reflections on the progress of science as the result of a complex interplay of ever-increasing amounts of data, theoretical and numerical developments, but also, at times, sociological factors, or technical and economic constraints that can limit its scope.
